- On a mission to loosen up, a miser's sets about buying a house in the country for his family.
- Their relationship on the rocks, a young Brooklyn couple heads to a remote B&B to work things out. But from the moment they arrive at The Happy House it's one disaster after another, and they soon begin to suspect they've wandered into a real life horror movie. Events escalate from weird to terrifying as they contend with the house's batty owner, her imposing son, a moody Swedish lepidopterist, a pedantic English professor, an extraordinarily rare butterfly, the world's best blueberry muffins, a .44 Magnum, a demented serial killer, and one very strict rulebook.

- Carlotta didn't know which she loved the best: James Arnold, old and rich, or Jack Wells, young, poor, but ambitious. She chooses Jack and he shows her their future home, a quaint, vine-covered house back from the country road, explaining that is where he and his father were raised. Carlotta doesn't like the idea and slips the ring off. Miserable, several days later she wanders to the old country home. The ghost of the house's life rises before her and tells her of the house's spirit. She sees Jack's grandfather bring his bride there. As the years pass, they keep the optimistic, cheerful atmosphere about the place and fortune smiles. The family scatters but soon one of the sons returns with his bride. A child comes and grown up. This child is Jack. Carlotta is astonished to see the little girl playing in the dust with him is herself. The spirit tells Carlotta through the visions: "The generations past have stamped this house with happiness for all brides who come." The ghost is gone and Jack walks up and she asks to be taken to his happy house.
